SARASTOA COUNTY residents voted on a special referendum issue on March 8, 2022 to continue with single district voting (for a 2nd time in two years). The 5 Sarasota County Commissioners on their own, without support of the Charter Review Board, sought to over turn the previous public vote and return to county wide election of County Commissioners.
This would result in the existing holders of power having greater control over who can run for county commission because of the great expense to run county wide vs. just a single district. The public saw through their attempt to keep tight control over who can hold commission office and defeated them again. The public won!
Alexandra Coe, member of the Sarasota County Charter Review Board spoke to the two sides of this very important issue being put to a vote.
